Bed and breakfast accommodation on Faial, the Azores

About the Azores and Faial

The Açores, a mysterious sounding name for 9 beautiful islands with a whole different landscape and character, translated to the Azores, in English.

The nine Islands are divided in 3 groups: Western Group are Corvo and Flores, the Central Group includes Graciosa, Terceira, Sao Jorge, Pico and Faial, the Eastern Group are Sao Miguel and Santa Maria.

The Azores are an excellent destination for nature lovers, hikers and anyone whom seeks rest and calmness. The mass-tourism hasn't reached the Azores, or modern day diseases such as stress, pollution of any kind, unkindness, and impatience.

The air is fresh, the water is clear and the islands are evergreen.

We enjoy a mild climate without any big temperature changes, an average 17°C in winter to 25°C in summer with clear blue skies. The average water temperature is 16°-24° C, ideal for diving, whale watching, swimming, etc.

Faial, also called "The Blue Island", with its main town Horta is one of the important cities of the Azores mainly because of its attractive, full-equipped marina where yearly more than 1,300 yachts ship in.

The wall paintings made by visiting sailors are a major tourist attraction.
Just as in the past, Horta is an important port of call for transatlantic yachts seeking supply or repairs as well as a visit to the famous sailor café "Peter Café Sport".

Enjoy Faial's history; visit Horta's museums, old fortress', churches, and the original harbour of Porto Pim where the ruins of the whale factory are located in the shadow of an old volcano "Monte da Guia".

Follow the coastline; visit the "Morro de Castelo Branco", an isolated rock just offshore, have a break in Varadouro and enjoy a swim in a natural pool situated in lava rock, the coastline is worth seeing.

Walk on ash at the Volcano in Capelinhos and climb up the entombed lighthouse.

Don't miss the lovely Botanical Garden in Flamengos, just outside Horta.

On the other side of the ridge of Horta is Praia do Almoxarife, a charming valley with a black sand beach, just 5 min from our house by car.

Drive further up the farmland to the centre of the island and admire the Caldeira do Faial in the natural reserve.

Book a tour with one of the Whale Watching companies and meet these majestic animals as well as dolphins, turtles and seabirds.

Visit the neighbouring islands, Pico and Sao Jorge.

Go climb Pico, during day or at night, and admire the highest viewpoint of Portugal!
